Welcome to paddleboarding for a 7-year-old! Here are simple steps to stay safe and have fun on the water.
Gear you need
- A life jacket or PFD that fits
- A kid sized stand up paddleboard
- A paddle that fits your height
- A safety leash to stay near your board
Where to practice
Find calm, shallow water with an adult supervising. Avoid waves, boats, and strong currents.
Getting on the board
- Kneel on the board in shallow water and hold the board with both hands for balance.
- Slowly stand up, one foot at a time, with your knees bent.
Stand tall and balance
- Feet about shoulder width apart
- Knees slightly bent
- Look ahead and keep your weight centered
Paddling basics
- Hold the paddle with your top hand on the T handle and your other hand on the shaft
- Put the blade in the water near the front and push back smoothly
- Alternate sides to go straight
Safety on the water
- Always wear a life jacket
- Stay near an adult and in your swimming area
- Listen to grown ups and follow directions
If you fall
- Relax, hold onto the board or paddle
- Float on your back or sit and wait for help if needed
- Get back on the board calmly from the side
Have fun practicing a little at a time and enjoy the water
