What is a poster board presentation?

A poster board helps you share your speech visually. It combines short text with pictures, charts, or drawings so your audience can follow along.

Materials you'll need

  • Poster board (matte finish, not shiny)
  • Markers, colored pencils, or paints
  • Ruler or straight edge, scissors, glue or tape
  • Printed photos or drawings and captions
  • Optional: sticky notes for quick edits

Plan before you build

  1. Understand the assignment and your audience.
  2. Choose a topic and a clear message or takeaway.
  3. Make a simple outline with 3–5 main points.
  4. Sketch a rough layout on paper (where the title, bullets, and visuals will go).

Design tips for a readable poster

  • Fonts and size: Title 40–60 pt; main bullets 24–28 pt; captions 18–20 pt.
  • Color and contrast: Use 2–3 colors and high contrast (dark text on light background).
  • Keep text short: Use keywords or short phrases—avoid long sentences.
  • Use visuals: Photos, drawings, or simple charts with captions that explain them.
  • Spacing and alignment: Leave margins, line up items, and don’t crowd the board.

Write the content

Turn your outline into poster text. Put main points as bullet lines. Add one caption per visual. Keep it simple and check spelling.

Assembly steps

  1. Lightly lay out where each item will go on the board.
  2. Glue or tape items in place, keeping distance between sections.
  3. Let glue dry; press down lightly to avoid wrinkles.

Practice and delivery

Practice aloud several times. Time your talk, pace your speech, and build eye contact. Your poster should support your speech, not read it for you.

Day of presenting

  • Stand to the side of your poster and refer to it with glanceable cues.
  • Be ready to answer questions about your topic.
  • Have a backup copy of any notes and a spare glue stick or tape in case you need fixes.

Quick checklist

  • Title visible and clear
  • 3–5 bullet points
  • 1–3 visuals with captions
  • Legible fonts and high contrast
  • Practice completed

Tip: Keep your poster neat and practice will help you feel confident during your speech.
