What is skip counting?
Skip counting means counting forward in jumps of a number other than 1. For a 6-year-old, it's a fun way to count faster and see patterns.
How to practice
- Pick a skip number. Start with 2, then try 5, then 10.
- Start at 0 or 1. Most skip counting starts at 0, like 0, 2, 4, ...
- Add the skip each time. Keep adding the same number every step.
- Use helpful tools. A number line, fingers, or objects helps you see the jumps.
Look at some easy examples
- Skip by 2s: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20
- Skip by 5s: 0, 5, 10, 15, 20
- Skip by 10s: 0, 10, 20, 30
Fun activities to practice
- Clap and count: Clap twice for each jump. 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, …
- Count on a number line: Draw a line with numbers 0–20 and hop along by 2s or 5s.
- Snack time math: Count cookies in groups of 2 or 5 and say the sequence aloud.
Tips for success
- Keep it playful, use visuals, and go at your own pace.
- Practice a few minutes each day to build a pattern memory.
