1) Why This Study Matters

Gaming disorder is a recognized condition in which gaming causes serious problems in a person's life. But researchers are still unsure whether mental health problems tend to come before gaming disorder, whether gaming disorder tends to come first, or whether they affect each other.

Understanding this could help experts improve how they identify gaming disorder and create better support for teenagers.

2) What the Study Aimed to Find Out

The researchers wanted to find out how mental health problems and gaming disorder might influence each other over time in adolescents.

They used a model called Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution (I-PACE). This model looks at how a person's traits, feelings, thoughts, and ability to control actions may work together to shape addictive behaviors.

3) How the Study Was Done

  • Study type: Researchers followed a group of participants over time.
  • Participants: The study included 4,289 U.S. adolescents who played video games.
  • Ages: Participants were about 11 to 12 years old at the first check-in, 12 to 13 at the second, and 13 to 14 at the third.
  • Data: The information came from three rounds of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, collected between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2022.
  • Analysis: Researchers analyzed the data from December 2024 through March 2025.

Because the researchers checked in with the same adolescents more than once, they could study whether earlier mental health or gaming problems were linked to later ones.
