Paragraph 1: Gaming and teenagers

Video games are a big part of life for many teenagers in the United States. Studies estimate that as many as 90% of teens play video games for about 100 minutes a day. Games use rewards to keep players interested, which can make gaming very enjoyable and, for some teens, difficult to stop. Teenagers may be especially sensitive to rewards and still be developing skills for planning and controlling impulses. The World Health Organization recognizes gaming disorder as a behavioral addiction, and the American Psychiatric Association includes it as a condition needing further study. However, researchers still do not fully understand how gaming disorder develops over time or how it relates to other mental health problems.

Paragraph 2: What gaming disorder means

Gaming disorder means having trouble controlling how much or how often you play. Gaming can become more important than other parts of life and cause serious problems with daily activities, such as school, relationships, or responsibilities. Researchers estimate that about 3% of gamers worldwide meet the criteria for gaming disorder; among teenagers, the estimate is about 8.5%. People with gaming disorder may also have other mental health or behavior difficulties. These can include anxiety, depression, ADHD, social problems, conduct problems, or aggression.
