Long ago, the Israelites were at war with the Philistines. A huge warrior named Goliath came out each day and challenged the Israelites to send someone to fight him. Everyone was frightened.
David was a young shepherd who came to bring food to his brothers in the Israelite army. When he heard Goliath’s challenge, David said he would face him. King Saul offered David armor, but it was too heavy, so David went without it.
David took his shepherd’s sling and chose five smooth stones from a stream. Goliath laughed when he saw the young boy, but David trusted that God would help him.
David placed a stone in his sling and swung it. The stone struck Goliath, and the giant fell to the ground. The Philistines ran away, and the Israelites were glad.
The story reminds many readers that courage and faith can help someone face a challenge that seems much bigger than they are.
