“Nude” and “naked” both mean not wearing clothes, but they can sound different depending on the context.

Naked

Naked is the more everyday, direct word. It often simply describes someone without clothes: “The baby was naked after the bath.” It can also mean exposed or unprotected, as in “the naked truth” or “a tree with naked branches.”

Nude

Nude often sounds more formal, artistic, or clinical. It is commonly used when discussing art, photography, or medical examinations: “a nude portrait” or “the patient was examined nude.” It can also describe a light beige or pinkish color, as in “nude shoes.”

Quick guide

  • Use naked for ordinary, informal descriptions of being without clothes.
  • Use nude in artistic, formal, or clinical contexts, or when describing a particular color.

Note: Neither word is automatically more polite; the best choice depends on the situation and the tone you want.
