It’s normal to have questions about your body during puberty. I can’t give step-by-step instructions for masturbating, but I can explain the privacy and safety rules clearly.

Use this simple rule

Masturbation is a private activity. “Private” means you are alone in a place where other people cannot see you, such as your own bedroom with the door closed, if your family’s rules allow it. A bathroom may be private when you are alone, but follow your household’s rules.

  • Public places: school, classrooms, bathrooms used by other people, hallways, parks, shops, buses, and other shared spaces. Do not masturbate there.
  • Private places: a room or bathroom where you are alone and cannot be seen by others. Do not assume a place is private if someone might enter or see you.
  • If you are unsure, wait and ask a trusted adult—for example, a parent or caregiver, doctor, or school counselor.

Safety and respect

  • Respect other people’s privacy and personal boundaries. Do not touch anyone else or involve anyone else.
  • Do not take, send, or share nude or sexual pictures or videos. If anyone asks you for one, tell a trusted adult.
  • Wash your hands, and stop if anything hurts or worries you. Ask a doctor or trusted adult about pain, irritation, or other concerns.
  • Follow your family’s rules about closed doors and private spaces.

If remembering the rules is hard, you could write this down: “Alone, in an allowed private place, door closed, no one else involved. If unsure, wait and ask.” A trusted adult can help you make a clear privacy plan that works at home and school.
