What are Fireflies?

Fireflies are little bugs that can glow in the dark! They come out in the summer when it’s warm. But, they are not really flies like the ones that buzz around your picnic. They belong to a special group of insects called beetles.

Why Do They Glow?

You may be wondering why these tiny bugs light up. Fireflies glow to find friends! The boys have a special light show to attract the girls. It’s like they are saying, 'Look at me!' with their bright lights.

How Do They Glow?

The glow comes from a special part inside them. When fireflies mix some chemicals in their bodies, it creates light! It’s called bioluminescence. The light can be yellow, green, or even orange.

Where Do We See Them?

You can see fireflies in gardens, parks, and fields when it gets dark. They look like little stars flying around. Sometimes they come out after it rains, too!

Fun Fact!

Fireflies are also called lightning bugs! Isn’t that a cool name? They’re like tiny fairy lights in nature.

Let’s Look for Fireflies!

Next time you’re outside at night, try to look up at the sky and around you to see if you can find some glowing fireflies. They make the night so special and magical!
