The joey is born when it is about the size of a small jellybean! It is so small that it can’t even see or hear yet. Once it is born, it immediately crawls up to the mother's pouch. This might sound a bit funny, but the joey is born missing many things, so it uses its little arms and legs to pull itself into the pouch!
Inside the pouch, the joey finds a warm and safe place to grow. The mother kangaroo’s pouch is designed just for her baby. It is soft and cozy, almost like a warm blanket. Inside this pouch, the mother kangaroo can keep her baby close to her heartbeat.
