What is Digestion?

Digestion is a special process that happens in our bodies to help us use the food we eat. When we eat, our body needs to break down the food to take out all the good stuff, like energy, vitamins, and nutrients. These are very important because they help our body stay strong and healthy!

How Does Digestion Work?

Here’s how digestion works, step by step:

  1. Eating: It all starts when we eat our food! We chew it with our teeth, and this makes the food smaller. Our spit also helps break it down a little more!
  2. Going Down: After chewing, the food goes down a tube called the esophagus. It’s like a slide that helps the food get to the stomach.
  3. Stomach Time: In the stomach, the food is mixed with special juices that break it down even more. This is like a big mixing bowl where everything gets blended.
  4. Intestines: Next, the broken-down food moves into the intestines. This is where our body takes out the energy and nutrients it needs. Some parts even help push out what we don’t need anymore!
  5. Energy and Health: The nutrients from the food go into our blood and get carried all around our body. They help us grow, play, and have fun!

How Long Does Digestion Take?

Digestion is a bit slow and takes about 24 hours! This means that from the time we eat until the food leaves our body, it takes a whole day!

Why is Digestion Important?

Good digestion is super important because it helps us use the food we eat for energy to run, play, and learn. If we didn’t have digestion, our bodies wouldn’t be able to turn food into the things we need to be healthy!
