What Are Hand Bones?

Hey there! Did you know that our hands have special bones that help us grip things? These bones are called hand bones. Let's learn about them together!

How Many Bones Do We Have in Our Hands?

In each hand, there are 27 bones. That’s quite a lot! These bones work together to help our hands move and do all sorts of amazing things!

Types of Hand Bones

There are three main types of bones in our hands:

  • Carpals: These are the bones in your wrist. There are 8 of them, and they help connect your hand to your arm.
  • Metacarpals: These bones make up the middle part of your hand. There are 5 of them, and they help support your fingers.
  • Phalanges: These are the bones in your fingers. Each finger has 3 phalanges, except for your thumb, which has 2. In total, there are 14 phalanges in both hands!

How Do Hand Bones Help Us Grasp Things?

Our hand bones are shaped in a way that allows us to move our fingers. When you want to grab something, like a toy or your favorite snack, your brain sends a signal to your hand. Your bones and muscles work together to close your fingers around it. This is called grasping.

Why Are Strong Hand Bones Important?

Having strong hand bones is important because they help us do many things, like:

  • Writing in school
  • Playing sports
  • Building with blocks
  • Holding hands with friends

So, next time you hold something in your hand, remember that it's thanks to your amazing bones that you can do that!

Take Care of Your Hands!

To keep your hand bones healthy, be sure to:

  • Eat good food, like fruits and veggies!
  • Practice using your hands for different activities.
  • Be careful when playing, so you don’t hurt your hands.

Keep exploring and using your hands—you'll be amazed by what they can do!
