What is the Present Perfect Progressive?

The present perfect progressive is a special way to talk about actions that started in the past and are still happening now or that just recently finished but are still important to now.

How Does It Work?

To form the present perfect progressive tense, we use three main parts:

  1. Have/Has: We use have for I, you, we, and they. We use has for he, she, and it.
  2. Been: This part will always be been.
  3. Verb + -ing: The main action that is happening is in the form of a verb ending in -ing.

Putting It All Together

So, if we want to say that someone has been playing soccer for a while, we can say:

"I have been playing soccer."

This means that you started playing soccer sometime in the past and you are still playing it now. Maybe you’re even still playing right at this moment!

Examples

  • “She has been reading her book.” (This means she started reading before now, and she might still be reading or she just finished.)
  • “They have been studying for the test.” (They started studying in the past and might still be studying now.)
  • “He has been playing video games all afternoon.” (He started playing earlier and is likely still playing.)

Why Use Present Perfect Progressive?

This tense helps us show that an action is connected to the present. It tells the listener that something important is happening or has been happening continuously over time.

Practice Time!

Can you think of something you have been doing recently? Try to use the present perfect progressive to say it! For example:

"I have been drawing pictures."

By using this tense, you can share your experiences in a more exciting and connected way!
