What is the Past Simple Progressive?

The past simple progressive (also called the past continuous) is a way to talk about actions that were happening in the past.

How Do We Use It?

We use the past simple progressive to express actions that were ongoing at a certain point in the past. It often shows that something was happening in the background while something else occurred.

How is it Formed?

The structure for the past simple progressive is:

  • was/were + verb + -ing

Here’s how it works:

  • If the subject is I, he, she, or it, we use was.
  • If the subject is you, we, or they, we use were.

Examples

  • I was playing soccer when it started to rain.
  • They were watching a movie while I was reading a book.
  • She was drawing a picture when the phone rang.

In these examples, the first part tells us what was happening (playing soccer, watching a movie, drawing), while the second part tells us what happened at the same time (it started to rain, I was reading a book, the phone rang).

Why is it Useful?

The past simple progressive is useful because it helps us describe actions in more detail, especially when one action interrupts another. It makes our speaking and writing clearer and more interesting!

Practice Time!

Now it's your turn! Can you make a sentence using the past simple progressive? For example, you could say, "I was eating dinner when my friend called." Give it a try!
