What is the Simple Present Tense?

The simple present tense is a way to talk about things that happen regularly, things that are true all the time, or things that happen now. For example, we can use it to talk about our daily routines, habits, and general facts.

How Do We Use the Simple Present?

1. **Routine Actions**: We use the simple present tense to talk about things we do every day.
Example: "I brush my teeth every morning."

2. **General Facts**: We use it to describe things that are always true or facts we know.
Example: "The sun rises in the east."

3. **Something We Enjoy or Like**: We can use it to express our likes or dislikes.
Example: "I love ice cream."

Structure of Simple Present

The simple present has a different structure for he, she, or it (singular subjects).
For these subjects, we usually add -s or -es to the main verb.

  • Examples:
    - I play soccer.
    - She plays soccer.
    - He watches cartoons.

Using 'Do' and 'Does'

When we make questions or negative sentences, we use 'do' or 'does.'
Use 'do' for I, you, we, and they.
Use 'does' for he, she, and it.

Examples:

  • Question: "Do you like pizza?"
  • Negative: "I do not like broccoli."
  • Question: "Does she play piano?"
  • Negative: "He does not watch TV."
