What is a Trapezoid?

Hi there! Today we're going to learn about a special shape called a trapezoid. Let's imagine a basket. This basket has a narrow bottom and a wider top.

Parts of a Trapezoid

A trapezoid is a shape that has:

  • Two sides that are parallel, which means they are straight and never touch each other, just like the top and bottom of our basket.
  • Two sides that are not parallel, which means they can meet if we draw them long enough. These sides make the basket look taller.

Why is it like a Basket?

Imagine holding a basket. If you look at it from the side, you see that it's small at the bottom where it touches the ground but opens up wider at the top where you put the fruits or toys.

Drawing a Trapezoid

Let's draw a trapezoid together!

  1. Start by drawing a straight line for the bottom (this is the narrow part).
  2. Now, draw two lines going up from each side of the bottom line at an angle.
  3. Finally, draw a straight line connecting the tops of these two lines to make it wider.

Now you have drawn a shape that looks like a basket – that’s a trapezoid!

Fun with Trapezoids!

Can you find real objects around your home or outside that are shaped like a trapezoid? Maybe a tent or a pyramid of fruits? Share what you find!
