Primary Safety Measure for Placing Ground Ladders

When using a ground ladder, the most important safety measure is to ensure it is placed at the right angle. Here’s how to do this step by step:

  1. Choose a Safe Spot: Find a safe, flat area where the ground ladder can be placed. Make sure there are no obstacles or hazards nearby, like sharp objects or uneven ground.
  2. Check the Ladder's Condition: Before setting up the ladder, check to see if it is not broken and that all the parts are working properly.
  3. Use the 4-to-1 Rule: A helpful way to place the ladder is to use the “4-to-1” rule. For every 4 feet of ladder height, you should set the base 1 foot away from the wall or support that the ladder is leaning against. For example, if the ladder is 8 feet tall, the bottom of the ladder should be 2 feet away from the wall.
  4. Position the Ladder: Set the ladder on the ground at the right angle. Make sure it is stable and won’t tip over.
  5. Secure the Ladder: If you have someone with you, ask them to hold the bottom of the ladder. If you’re on your own, make sure no one or nothing is leaning against it.
  6. Climb Carefully: When climbing, always face the ladder and hold onto the rungs. Never lean too far out to the side.

By following these steps, you can safely place and use a ground ladder! Remember, safety first!
