What is a Trapezoid?

A trapezoid is a special shape. It has four sides, just like a rectangle or a square. But what makes a trapezoid special is that it has one pair of sides that are parallel. This means that those two sides run in the same direction and are always the same distance apart.

Looking at a Basket

Imagine a basket. When we look at some baskets, especially the ones that are wider at the top than the bottom, they can look a little like trapezoids. Here’s how:

• Top Side: The top part of the basket is usually wider, like the top base of a trapezoid.
• Bottom Side: The bottom part is smaller, like the bottom base of a trapezoid.
• Sides: The sides of the basket connect the top and bottom. These sides are not parallel and go downwards, just like the non-parallel sides of a trapezoid.

Let’s Draw a Trapezoid

Let’s try drawing a trapezoid like a basket!

1. Take a piece of paper and a pencil.
2. Draw a straight line across the top. This is the top of your basket.
3. Now, draw another shorter line across the bottom. This is the bottom of your basket.
4. Connect the ends of the top line to the ends of the bottom line with two straight lines going down.
5. Your shape should look like a wide top and a narrow bottom, like a real basket!
