What is Respiration?

Respiration is the process by which humans and other living organisms take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide. It is essential for producing the energy our bodies need to function.

How Do We Breathe?

Breathing involves two main steps: inhaling (taking air in) and exhaling (pushing air out).

1. Inhaling

When we inhale, air enters through our nose or mouth. It then travels down our windpipe (trachea) and into our lungs. While in the lungs, oxygen from the air moves into the blood, and this oxygen-rich blood is then pumped by the heart to all parts of the body.

2. Exhaling

After our cells use oxygen to produce energy, they create a waste product called carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide travels back to the lungs, and when we exhale, we release it into the air.

Why is Respiration Important?

Respiration is critical because it provides our cells with the oxygen they need to create energy. Without it, our cells would not be able to function, and we wouldn't be able to survive.
