What Are Fossils?

Fossils are the remains of plants or animals that lived a long, long time ago. Imagine if we could see what dinosaurs looked like! Fossils help us see those old creatures even though they are not here anymore.

How Do Fossils Form?

Fossils are made when something dies and gets covered by dirt and rocks. Over many, many years, the bones or leaves turn into hard stones. This is like how a cookie becomes hard when it cools down after baking!

Where Can We Find Fossils?

We can find fossils in lots of places! Sometimes they are hidden in rocks. You might see them in museums, where you can look at dinosaur bones or old trees. Walking on a beach can even show you fossils in the rocks!

Why Are Fossils Important?

Fossils teach us about how life was many years ago. They help us learn about what animals and plants lived with the dinosaurs, how big they were, and how they changed over time!

Let’s Have Fun!

If you want to pretend to be a paleontologist (that's someone who studies fossils), you can look for 'fossils' in your backyard! You can gather special stones or even make your own fossils using clay and small toys. Press them into the clay and when it hardens, you’ll have your own fossils!

Exploring fossils can be exciting and fun! Remember, while you learn about them, you can also use your imagination to picture the amazing creatures that once walked the Earth!
