How Do Fish Breathe?

Fish breathe underwater, but they don't have lungs like we do. Instead, they have special organs called gills. Let’s learn step by step how fish breathe:

1. Water Intake

When a fish swims, it opens its mouth to take in water. This water is very important because it contains oxygen, which fish need to live, just like we need air.

2. Passing Through Gills

After the fish takes in water, it closes its mouth and the water flows over its gills. Think of gills like a filter that can take out the oxygen from the water. The water goes out through the gill openings on the sides of the fish’s head.

3. Taking in Oxygen

As the water passes over the gills, the fish’s body absorbs the oxygen that’s in the water. The gills are very thin and have lots of tiny blood vessels that pick up the oxygen. This is how fish get the oxygen they need to breathe!

4. Getting Rid of Carbon Dioxide

Just like we breathe out carbon dioxide, fish also need to get rid of carbon dioxide from their bodies. As the oxygen is absorbed into the blood, the carbon dioxide goes back into the water through the gills. This is how fish keep their bodies healthy.
