Making a Hanging Swing from an Egg Carton
In this project, Nolan and Nevaeh created a creative hanging swing using materials you can find around your house. Let’s break it down step by step!
Materials Needed
- Half of an egg carton
- String (like twine or yarn)
- Glue (such as craft glue or a glue stick)
- An avocado (or any small lightweight item to test the swing)
Steps to Create the Swing
Step 1: Prepare the Egg Carton
Take the half of the egg carton and ensure it’s clean and dry. This will be the seat of your swing!
Step 2: Glue for Stability
If you want to secure the egg carton more, you can add some glue to the edges, but be sure to let it dry before moving on to the next step.
Step 3: Cut the String
Cut two equal lengths of string. These will hold your swing in place, so make them long enough to hang but not so long that it becomes hard to manage.
Step 4: Attach the String
Take one piece of string and tie it securely to one side of the egg carton. Do the same for the other side, ensuring both strings are attached securely. This will help the swing move freely!
Step 5: Find a Spot to Hang the Swing
Choose a place to hang your swing. This could be from a sturdy branch outside or a hook inside. Make sure it’s a safe spot!
Step 6: Test Your Swing
Before placing the avocado, give the swing a gentle push to see if it swings properly. If it swings well, you can place the avocado in the swing!
Step 7: Enjoy and Observe
Watch how the avocado swings back and forth. You can discuss with your friends why it swings—this is due to gravity pulling the avocado down and the force of swinging!
Conclusion
This project is not only fun but also a great way to learn about how swings work, forces, and balance. Plus, it's a creative way to use everyday materials!
Happy swinging!
