Understanding Landfills

A landfill is a place where we take our garbage to bury it under the ground. It's designed to safely hold waste so that it doesn't harm the environment.

What Happens When a Landfill Gets Full?

Once a landfill is full, a few things can happen:

  1. Closure: The landfill is closed off, meaning no more trash can be dumped there. Workers cover it with dirt and sometimes plant grass or trees on top.
  2. Monitoring: After it is closed, the area is monitored for a long time to make sure that nothing harmful leaks into the soil or water. This is really important to keep the environment safe.
  3. New Landfill: Often, if a landfill is full, a new landfill site is needed. This can take time to find, and it has to be a place that is safe and away from people.
  4. Recycling and Reducing Waste: When a landfill is full, communities think about better ways to deal with garbage. This can include recycling more items, composting food scraps, or reducing the amount of waste people create in the first place.

Why Is This Important?

It’s important to know what happens when landfills get full because it affects our environment and how we handle waste. By recycling and reducing what we throw away, we can help make sure that landfills don’t fill up too quickly!
