What is a Rainbow?

A rainbow is a beautiful, colorful arc that appears in the sky. You can see it when it rains while the sun is still shining. Let's learn how it happens step by step!

Step 1: Sunshine and Rain

First, for a rainbow to appear, it needs both the sun and rain. When it rains, the drops of water are in the sky. If the sun is shining at the same time, the magic can happen!

Step 2: Light and Water

Next, when the sunlight hits the raindrops, something interesting happens. The light that comes from the sun is made up of many colors, just like in a box of crayons!

Step 3: Breaking Up the Colors

As the sunlight goes into the raindrop, it bends and breaks up into different colors. This bending is called refraction. It’s like how a prism works! The colors separate into red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. These are the colors of the rainbow!

Step 4: What You See

Finally, the light comes back out of the raindrop at a different angle. When lots of raindrops are in the sky, and the sun shines on them just right, you can see all those wonderful colors in a big, beautiful arc. That’s a rainbow!

Why Rainbows are Special

Rainbows are special because they remind us of nature's beauty and how things can work together to create something amazing. Next time it rains and the sun is shining, look up at the sky and see if you can spot a rainbow!
