What is a Landfill?

A landfill is a place where trash is taken and stored safely. It’s built using different materials and methods to make sure it doesn’t harm the environment.

Step 1: Planning!

Before building a landfill, experts study the area to find the best location. They look for land that is far from rivers or lakes to prevent waste from polluting water.

Step 2: Lining the Landfill

Once the location is chosen, the ground is prepared. A special protective layer called a liner is placed on the bottom. This liner is usually made of plastic or clay and helps keep the waste separate from the soil and groundwater.

Step 3: Building Layers

The landfill is built in layers. When trash arrives, it is pushed over the liner, and each layer of trash is compacted (squished down) to save space. This is done using large machines like bulldozers.

Step 4: Covering it Up

After a layer of trash is added, a layer of soil or another material is placed on top. This helps reduce smells, keep animals away, and prevent rainwater from mixing with the trash.

Step 5: Monitoring and Maintenance

Even after the landfill is full, it is monitored. This means that experts check for leaks, manage any harmful gases, and make sure the environment stays safe.

Final Thoughts

Constructing a landfill is a careful process that helps us manage waste while keeping the Earth safe. Remember, recycling and reducing waste are even better ways to help the environment!
