What is Mitosis?

Mitosis is the process where a single cell divides to create two identical cells. It is important for growth, repair, and reproduction in living organisms. The process consists of several stages:

  1. Prophase: The DNA condenses into visible chromosomes and the nuclear membrane starts to break down.
  2. Metaphase: Chromosomes line up in the center of the cell.
  3. Anaphase: The chromosomes are pulled apart to opposite sides of the cell.
  4. Telophase: New nuclear membranes form around each set of chromosomes, and the cell prepares to divide.
  5. Cytokinesis: The actual division of the cell's cytoplasm, resulting in two separate cells.

Mitosis ensures that each new cell gets an exact copy of the original cell's DNA, which is crucial for the organism's proper functioning.
