Understanding Food Groups

Food groups are different categories of food that provide us with the nutrients our bodies need to grow and stay healthy. There are five main food groups, and each one plays a special role in keeping us strong and energetic. Let’s go through each of them step by step:

  1. Fruits: Fruits are sweet and delicious! They are full of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Eating a variety of fruits can help keep your immune system strong. Examples include apples, bananas, oranges, and berries.
  2. Vegetables: Vegetables are super important for our health too. They come in many colors and shapes. They provide essential nutrients and help our bodies fight off diseases. Try to eat a rainbow of vegetables! Some examples are carrots, broccoli, spinach, and peppers.
  3. Grains: Grains are foods made from wheat, rice, oats, and corn. They give us energy that we need to play and learn. Whole grains, like brown rice and whole wheat bread, are even better because they have more nutrients. Examples include rice, bread, and pasta.
  4. Protein: Protein helps build and repair our muscles. It’s important for growing kids like you! Good sources of protein include meat, fish, beans, and nuts. Examples include chicken, fish, beans, and eggs.
  5. Dairy: Dairy products provide calcium, which is important for strong bones and teeth. Milk, yogurt, and cheese are all great sources of dairy. Examples include milk, cheese, and yogurt.

It’s important to eat a variety of foods from each food group to make sure our bodies get all the nutrients they need. Next time you eat, try to include something from each group! That way, you can stay healthy and strong.
