Understanding Clocks: How They Tell Time
Hi there! Do you know what a clock is? A clock helps us know what time it is. It has a round shape and usually has numbers on it, just like a circle. But what makes a clock special are its hands!
Parts of a Clock
A clock has two main hands that move around:
- The Short Hand: This is called the hour hand. It shows us the hour or how many hours have passed.
- The Long Hand: This is called the minute hand. It moves faster than the hour hand and tells us how many minutes have passed.
How Do They Work?
As time goes by, both the hour hand and the minute hand move around the clock. The minute hand goes all the way around the clock every hour. The hour hand takes a little longer – it moves from one number to the next in 60 minutes!
Finding the Time
When you look at the clock, you first check where the short hand is pointing. That tells you the hour. Then, you look at the long hand to see how many minutes it is past that hour. For example, if the short hand points at 2 and the long hand points at 12, it is 2:00. If the long hand is on 3, that means it is 2:15, because there are 15 minutes past 2!
Why is Time Important?
Knowing what time it is helps us with our daily activities. It tells us when to wake up, when to eat, and when to go to bed. Isn't that amazing?
Now you know how clocks work! Keep looking at clocks to practice telling time!
