How Clocks Work

Clocks are special tools that help us know what time it is. They have two main hands that move around a circle. Let’s learn more about these hands and what they do!

Parts of a Clock

  • The Hour Hand: This is the shorter hand. It shows you what hour it is.
  • The Minute Hand: This is the longer hand. It shows you the minutes, which are smaller divisions of an hour.

How to Read the Clock

1. **Look at the Hour Hand:** When the hour hand points to a number, it tells you which hour it is. For example, if it points to 3, then it is 3 o'clock.

2. **Look at the Minute Hand:** The minute hand tells you how many minutes past the hour it is. The clock has 60 small lines around it, and each line represents one minute. If it points to the 12, it means it is exactly on the hour. If it points to the 3, it means it is 15 minutes past the hour.

Putting It All Together

When you look at a clock, you combine what both hands are saying. For example, if the hour hand is on 4 and the minute hand is on 6, it means it is 4:30, which is half-past 4.

Fun Practice!

You can practice telling time with a real clock by following these steps. Try setting the hands to different times and see if you can say what time it is!

Now you know how to read a clock and understand what time it is!
