Learn about walruses and how their flippers help them swim but not walk. Perfect for curious 4-year-olds!
A walrus is a big, blubbery animal that lives in the cold waters of the Arctic. They are known for their long tusks and whiskers!
Walruses have special flippers. Think of flippers as big hands that help them swim. Their flippers are flat and wide, which makes it easy for them to paddle through the water, just like you might flap your arms when you swim!
When walruses come out of the water and want to move on land, they don't walk like we do. Their flippers can push them along the ground, but they are not made for walking. Instead, walruses kinda wiggle and pull their heavy bodies to move. It's like they're doing a funny dance!
Flippers help walruses dive deep into the ocean to find food, like clams and fish. So while they can’t walk well, they are fantastic swimmers!
Walruses use their flippers to swim really well in the water, but when it’s time to move on land, they have to wiggle and slide instead of walking. Isn’t that cool?
