What is Simple Present Tense?
The simple present tense is a way to talk about things that happen regularly or all the time. It can tell us about:
- Things that are true right now
- Habits or routines
- Universal truths (things that are always true)
How to Use Simple Present Tense
In English, we usually make simple present sentences using the following structure:
Subject + Base form of the verb
Let’s break that down:
- Subject: This is who or what we are talking about. It could be I, you, he, she, it, we or they.
- Base form of the verb: This is the verb in its most simple form. For example, play, eat, and run.
Examples of Simple Present Tense
1. I play soccer. (I am talking about something I do regularly.)
2. She likes ice cream. (This shows what she enjoys all the time.)
3. They go to school every day. (This describes a routine they have.)
4. The sun rises in the east. (This is a universal truth that is always correct.)
Important Notes
- If the subject is he, she, or it, we usually add -s to the verb. For example, He plays basketball, She eats cake.
- If the subject is I, you, we, or they, we use the base form of the verb. For example, I play basketball, We eat cake.
