What is a Period?
A period is a natural part of growing up, and it's something that will happen to many girls when they get a little older, usually around 9 to 14 years old. It’s a sign that a girl's body is changing, and she is becoming a young woman.
Why Does It Happen?
Every month, a girl’s body prepares for the possibility of having a baby. The body gets ready by making a special lining in the uterus (that’s a part inside the belly). If there’s no baby, this lining is no longer needed, and the body gets rid of it. This is what we call a period.
What Happens During a Period?
During a period, a girl will have some bleeding from her vagina. This bleeding usually lasts for a few days, often between 3 to 7 days. Some girls might feel a little uncomfortable or have stomach cramps, but that’s perfectly normal.
How to Take Care of Yourself?
It’s important to stay clean and comfortable. Here are some helpful tips:
- Use pads or tampons: During a period, girls can use menstrual pads or tampons to help soak up the blood.
- Keep track of the days: Many girls like to keep a calendar to track when their periods come, so they know when to expect it.
- Stay active: Doing fun activities can help feel better and distract from any discomfort.
It's Normal!
Having a period is completely normal and every girl goes through this change. It’s also a good idea to talk to a parent, guardian, or a trusted adult if you have questions or if you want to know more about it. Remember, everyone’s body is different, and that’s okay!
