What is Sand Casting?

How Does Sand Casting Work?
- Prepare the Mold: The first step is to make a mold from sand. A mold is a hollow form that will give shape to the metal. To create a mold, special sand, often mixed with clay and water, is packed around a pattern that represents the object to be made.

- Assembly of Mold Halves: Most molds are created in two halves. Once the sand is packed around the pattern, the two halves are carefully removed, and the pattern is taken out, leaving a hollow space.
- Pouring the Metal: Molten metal, which is the metal that has been heated until it becomes liquid, is then poured into the hollow space of the mold. This must be done quickly to prevent the sand from cooling and solidifying.
- Cooling and Solidifying: After the metal is poured, it takes some time to cool down and solidify inside the mold. This is an important step, as the metal needs to harden properly to maintain the shape of the mold.
- Removing the Casting: Once the metal has cooled, the sand mold is broken apart to reveal the newly formed metal object, known as a casting.
- Finishing Touches: The final step involves cleaning up the casting, which may include removing extra metal (known as flash) and polishing the surface to make it look as desired.
