Exploring the social and medical conditions for African Americans seeking care at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1950s.
In 1951, many hospitals in America refused to treat African Americans. This was due to the system of racial segregation that kept black patients from receiving good medical care. Johns Hopkins Hospital was one of the few places that accepted black patients. This made it a vital choice for anyone in need of medical help. Despite this, the care they received was often limited and not as good as what white patients got. Henrietta Lacks went there because it was one of the rare options available to her in that time.
