Introduction to Welding

Welding is the process of joining two pieces of metal together using heat. There are many types of welding, but today we will focus on two common methods: MIG and TIG welding.

What is MIG Welding?

MIG stands for Metal Inert Gas. In MIG welding, a machine feeds a solid wire into the weld area. This wire melts and combines with the metals being joined. Here’s how it works:

  • Heat Source: An electric arc is created between the wire and the metals. This heat melts the metal and the wire.
  • Shielding Gas: A gas, usually argon or a mix, is used to protect the weld from contamination in the air.
  • Process: The welder moves the MIG gun along the joint where the two pieces of metal meet. The molten metal from the wire fills the gap and forms a strong bond.

What is TIG Welding?

TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas. TIG welding is a bit different because it uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode. Instead of feeding wire, the welder often adds a filler rod manually. Here’s how it works:

  • Heat Source: Just like in MIG, an electrical arc creates the heat, but it comes from the tungsten electrode instead of a wire.
  • Shielding Gas: TIG also uses a gas, usually argon, to keep the weld area clean and uncontaminated.
  • Process: The welder moves the torch, controls the heat, and can add filler material as needed to create a strong joint.
