What are Verbs?

First, let's talk about what verbs are. Verbs are action words. They tell us what someone is doing. For example, in the sentence, 'She runs', the word 'runs' is the verb because it tells us what 'she' is doing.

Verbs with 's'

Now, sometimes we add an 's' to the end of a verb when we are talking about someone who is doing the action only ONE time. Here are some examples:

  • He jumps - 'jumps' has an 's' because we are talking about one person, 'he'.
  • She sings - 'sings' has an 's' because we are talking about one person, 'she'.

Verbs without 's'

But what if we are talking about more than one person, or we are talking about 'I' or 'you'? In those cases, we do NOT add 's'. Check out these examples:

  • I run - we don’t add an 's' because 'I' is talking about myself.
  • They play - we do not add an 's' because 'they' means more than one person.

Quick Recap

So remember, we add 's' to verbs when we talk about:

  • One person doing the action (he, she, it)

And we do not add 's' when we talk about:

  • More than one person (they, we)
  • Talking about yourself (I)
  • Talking to someone (you)

Now you know when to use 's' with verbs! Can you think of some more examples?
