What is a Landfill?

A landfill is a specific area where we dump waste that we can't recycle or reuse. It’s like a big, organized hole in the ground where trash is placed and covered up.

When we throw away things like food scraps, old furniture, and broken toys, they usually end up in a landfill. The waste is layered and compacted to take up less space. Over time, the landfill becomes a large mound of waste.

Landfills have special systems to manage things like water and gases that can come from the waste. This helps protect the environment and keeps the area safe. However, landfills can still be harmful because they take up space and can pollute the air and water.

So, it's important for us to recycle more and create less waste, which helps reduce what goes into landfills!
