The Dust Bowl happened in the 1930s when a big drought made the land in the Great Plains very dry. Because farmers had removed the grass, strong winds blew away the dirt, creating huge dust storms that ruined crops and forced many farmers to leave their homes. The government helped by starting programs to plant trees and take care of the soil, which eventually helped farmers get back on their feet.
