What is a Landfill?
A landfill is a place where we put our trash and garbage when we can't recycle or reuse it. Think of it as a giant hole in the ground made just for waste. The goal is to keep our trash out of the streets and parks.
How Do Landfills Work?
- Collecting Trash: People throw away their garbage in bins, and trucks come to collect it.
- Bringing to the Landfill: The garbage trucks drive to the landfill, where they dump the trash in specific areas.
- Layering and Compacting: Workers spread the trash out in layers and press it down to save space.
- Covering: After adding a layer, it is covered with dirt or grass to reduce odors and keep animals away.
What Happens to Trash in a Landfill?
The trash in a landfill breaks down very slowly. Some things, like food, can decompose faster, while plastics can still be there for hundreds of years!
Why Are Landfills Important?
Landfills help keep our cities clean by making sure garbage is collected and stored safely. However, they can also harm the environment if not managed properly, like causing pollution or making it hard for animals to live nearby.
How Can We Help?
Instead of sending everything to landfills, we can recycle things like paper and plastic. We can also try to reduce the amount of trash we create by using less packaging or bringing our reusable bags.
