What is the Spring Equinox?

The Spring Equinox is a special day that happens every year around March 20th or 21st. On this day, day and night are about the same length. This means there are approximately 12 hours of sunlight and 12 hours of darkness.

Why Does the Spring Equinox Happen?

The Spring Equinox happens because of how the Earth moves around the Sun. The Earth is tilted on its axis, which means it doesn’t sit straight up and down. Sometimes, as the Earth moves along its path, the tilt makes it so the Sun shines directly on the equator. When this occurs, we have an equinox!

What Does it Mean for Us?

The Spring Equinox means that spring is starting in many places around the world! This is the time when flowers start to bloom, trees grow new leaves, and animals come out of their winter homes. It’s a season of growth and new beginnings. People celebrate the longer days and milder weather by spending more time outdoors!

Fun Fact!

Some cultures celebrate the Spring Equinox with festivals. For example, in Japan, many people enjoy watching the cherry blossoms bloom!
