What is Global Warming?

Global warming is when the Earth's temperature gets hotter because of certain gases in the air. These gases, called greenhouse gases, come from things we do every day, like driving cars, using electricity, and cutting down trees.

How Does It Happen?

When we burn things like coal, oil, or gas to make energy, they release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Some of these gases include carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane. These gases trap heat from the sun in our atmosphere, kind of like a blanket keeps you warm. When there is too much of these gases, it makes our planet warmer than it should be.

What Are the Effects of Global Warming?

Global warming can cause many problems for our planet. Here are a few:

  • Melting Ice: Glaciers and ice caps in places like the North and South Poles are melting, which raises sea levels.
  • Weather Changes: It can make weather more extreme, which means some places have very hot summers or very cold winters.
  • Plant and Animal Life: Some animals and plants might struggle to survive because their homes are changing. For example, polar bears depend on ice to hunt, and if the ice melts, they have a hard time finding food.

What Can We Do to Help?

Even though global warming seems like a big problem, there are things we can do to help!

  • Use Less Energy: Turn off the lights when you leave a room and use less water.
  • Ride Bicycles or Walk: Instead of using cars all the time, biking or walking helps keep the air cleaner.
  • Plant Trees: Trees help clean the air and can absorb some of the greenhouse gases.

So, global warming is a serious issue, but if we all work together and make small changes in our daily lives, we can help protect our planet!
