Axolotls and Their Habitat

Axolotls are fascinating creatures, often called "Mexican walking fish." Even though they are called fish, axolotls are actually amphibians. They belong to a group of animals that also includes frogs and salamanders.

Where Do Axolotls Live?

Axolotls are native to Mexico, and they primarily live in the canals of the ancient lakes in the region of Lago de Xochimilco. This area is near Mexico City, and it is where they are commonly found.

Habitat Details

• Water Environment: Axolotls prefer fresh water and live in lakes and canals that are not too deep.
• Temperature: They like cool water, usually around 16 to 18 degrees Celsius (60 to 64 degrees Fahrenheit).
• Plants and Hiding Places: In their natural habitat, axolotls love to have plenty of plants and hiding spots, which help them feel safe.

Since axolotls are mostly found in the wild in Mexico, they are considered an endangered species. This means that there are not many left in their natural home, which is why many people also keep them in aquariums today.

Fun Fact

Although they live in water their whole life, axolotls have the ability to regenerate lost body parts like limbs!
