What is Division?

Division is one of the four basic math operations. It’s the process of splitting a number into equal parts. When you divide, you are figuring out how many times one number can fit into another.

Division Vocabulary

  • Dividend: The number you want to divide. (e.g., in 12 ÷ 3, 12 is the dividend)
  • Divisor: The number you are dividing by. (e.g., in 12 ÷ 3, 3 is the divisor)
  • Quotient: The result of the division. (e.g., in 12 ÷ 3, the quotient is 4)

How Does Division Work?

Let’s break down the division of 12 ÷ 3 step by step:

  1. You have 12 items, and you want to share them equally among 3 friends.
  2. Ask yourself, “How many items does each friend get?”
  3. Start giving one item to each friend until you run out of items:
    • 1st friend gets 1 item
    • 2nd friend gets 1 item
    • 3rd friend gets 1 item
    • 1st friend gets another item...
    • ...until you distribute all 12 items.
  4. When you finish distributing, you realize each friend has 4 items. So, 12 ÷ 3 = 4!

Using Division in Real Life

Division is everywhere! Here are some examples:

  • If you have 20 cookies and want to share them equally with 4 friends, you can use division. 20 ÷ 4 = 5 cookies for each friend.
  • If you have 30 crayons and want to organize them into boxes of 6, you can find out how many boxes you need by dividing. 30 ÷ 6 = 5 boxes.

Practice Makes Perfect!

To get better at division, practice with different numbers and try sharing things equally. You can also use drawings or objects like toys or candies to visualize how division works. Happy dividing!
