Objective
The objective of this art lesson is for the 6-year-old homeschool student to learn about flowers and create their own flower artwork using only materials readily available at home.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons, colored pencils, or markers
- A reference book or website about flowers
Before starting the lesson, familiarize yourself with different types of flowers and their characteristics. Prepare the materials on a clean workspace.
Activities
- Introduction to Flowers: Begin by showing the student pictures of various flowers and discussing their different shapes, colors, and sizes.
- Observational Drawing: Encourage the student to choose a flower from the reference book or website and attempt to draw it on their paper. Remind them to pay attention to the details and shapes of the flower.
- Coloring and Shading: Once the drawing is complete, guide the student in using crayons, colored pencils, or markers to add color and shading to their artwork. Discuss how flowers can have different colors and how shading can create depth and dimension.
- Creative Expression: After completing the realistic flower drawing, encourage the student to create their own imaginative flower using their imagination. They can experiment with different shapes, colors, and patterns.
- Presentation and Reflection: Have the student share their artwork with you or other family members. Ask them to explain their choices and what they enjoyed most about the activity.
Talking Points
- "Flowers come in many different shapes, colors, and sizes. Can you name some flowers you know?"
- "When we draw a flower, we need to look closely at its petals, stem, and leaves. Let's try drawing a flower together!"
- "Now we can add some colors to our flower. What colors do you think would look nice? How about shading to make it look more realistic?"
- "Let's use our imagination and create a flower that doesn't exist in real life. What colors and shapes do you want to use for your unique flower?"
- "It's time to show off your artwork! Tell me about your favorite part of the activity and why."
