Objective

The objective of this lesson is to introduce the concept of balls and tubes to the 2-year-old student. Through various activities, the student will develop their English, Math, Physical Education, Science, and Social Studies skills while exploring the properties and uses of balls and tubes.

Materials and Prep

  • Assorted balls (different sizes, colors, textures)
  • Cardboard tubes (from paper towel rolls or similar)
  • Empty containers (e.g., buckets, baskets)
  • Masking tape
  • Markers
  • Open space for physical activities

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Ball Exploration: Encourage the student to touch, roll, and bounce different balls. Ask them to describe the balls using simple words like big, small, soft, hard, etc.
  2. Tube Toss: Set up empty containers of various sizes around the room. Show the student how to throw balls through the tubes to make them land in the containers. Let them practice their aim and coordination.
  3. Ball Sorting: Create a sorting station using masking tape to mark different areas on the floor. Label each area with a color or texture (e.g., red, bumpy). Have the student sort the balls into the correct areas based on the given criteria.
  4. Tube Roll Race: Set up a start and finish line using markers. Show the student how to roll a ball through a tube from the start to the finish line. Let them take turns and cheer for each other as they complete the race.
  5. Ball Art: Give the student a large piece of paper and some markers. Show them how to roll different balls in paint and then onto the paper to create unique patterns and designs. Encourage creativity and exploration.

Talking Points

  • "Balls come in different sizes, colors, and textures. Some are big, and some are small."
  • "We can roll, bounce, and throw balls. Let's see how high we can bounce them!"
  • "Tubes are like tunnels. We can roll balls through them and make them land in containers."
  • "Let's sort the balls based on their colors. All the red balls go in this area, and all the blue balls go in that area."
  • "We can have a race by rolling balls through the tubes. Who can get to the finish line first?"
  • "We can use balls as paintbrushes. Roll them in paint and then on the paper to make beautiful patterns."
