Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic math skills while exploring the world of Pokemon.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- A calculator (optional)
- Basic knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
Activities
-
Create a Pokemon Team
Choose 6 Pokemon from your favorite Pokemon game and write down their levels. Add up the levels of your team members to find the total level of your team. Practice addition while having fun with Pokemon!
-
Calculate Experience Points (EXP)
Imagine your Pokemon just won a battle and gained a certain number of EXP. Choose a Pokemon and decide how much EXP it gained. Use multiplication to calculate how much EXP it needs to level up. For example, if your Pokemon needs 100 EXP to level up and it just gained 20 EXP, how many more battles will it need to win? Practice multiplication and subtraction skills!
-
Pokemon Type Matchups
Research the different types of Pokemon and their strengths and weaknesses. Create a chart or a list of type matchups, such as Fire beats Grass but loses to Water. Use this knowledge to solve math problems. For example, if you have a Water-type Pokemon with 70 HP and it is hit by a Fire-type move dealing 30 damage, how much HP will your Pokemon have left? Practice subtraction while learning about Pokemon types!
