Objective

Materials and Prep

  • Glass of water
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Balloons
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Measuring spoons
  • Small plastic cups
  • Plastic dropper or pipette
  • Protective goggles (optional)

Make sure to have adult supervision and permission before conducting any experiments. Clear a safe workspace, and have paper towels or napkins handy for any spills.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Fizzing Balloons
  • Inflate a balloon by adding baking soda to a small plastic cup and pouring vinegar into another small plastic cup. Attach the balloon to the cup with vinegar using the plastic dropper or pipette. Carefully pour the vinegar into the cup with baking soda and observe the balloon inflate due to the chemical reaction.

  • Activity 2: Colorful Volcano
  • Create a volcano shape using modeling clay or playdough. Place a small container in the center and add baking soda and food coloring (optional) to it. Pour vinegar into the container and watch as the volcano erupts with colorful foam.

  • Activity 3: Dancing Raisins
  • Fill a glass with water and drop a few raisins into it. Observe how the raisins start to move up and down in the water. This is due to carbon dioxide bubbles attaching to the raisins and making them float.

Talking Points

  • Chemical reactions occur when different substances interact with each other. In the first activity, the baking soda and vinegar react to produce carbon dioxide gas, which inflates the balloon.
  • In the second activity, the baking soda and vinegar also react, but this time the food coloring adds a visual effect to make the eruption more exciting.
  • The third activity demonstrates how carbon dioxide bubbles can cause objects to float. The raisins act as a catalyst for the carbon dioxide bubbles to attach to and bring them up to the surface.
  • Remember to always have adult supervision and permission when conducting experiments. Safety goggles can be worn to protect your eyes from any splashes or spills.
