Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

  • Learn about kites and their different shapes
  • Practice counting and basic addition using kite-themed activities
  • Explore the science behind how kites fly

Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper in various colors
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Markers or crayons
  • A piece of string or yarn
  • Small objects like feathers or ribbons (optional)

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  • Create a kite collage: Provide the student with construction paper, scissors, glue stick, and markers or crayons. Instruct them to cut out different shapes of kites from the construction paper and decorate them using the markers or crayons. They can then glue the kites onto a larger piece of paper to create a collage.
  • Kite counting: Draw or print out pictures of kites in different quantities (e.g., one kite, two kites, three kites, etc.). Ask the student to count the number of kites in each picture and say the corresponding number out loud. You can also encourage them to practice basic addition by asking questions like "If we have two kites and add one more, how many kites do we have in total?"
  • Flying experiment: Take the student outside (if possible) and demonstrate how a kite flies. Attach a piece of string or yarn to a small object like a feather or ribbon to act as a tail. Hold the string and let the wind catch the object, showing how it stays in the air. Explain that kites need wind to fly and how the tail helps with stability.

Talking Points

  • "Kites come in different shapes like diamonds, triangles, and rectangles."
  • "Let's count the kites together. One kite, two kites, three kites... Great job!"
  • "When we add two kites and one more kite, we have three kites in total."
  • "Kites need wind to fly. The wind pushes against the kite and makes it go up in the sky."
  • "The tail of a kite helps it stay balanced and fly smoothly."
