Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basics of music and have fun exploring different musical activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencils
  • A computer or tablet with internet access
  • Optional: Musical instruments or objects that can be used as makeshift instruments (e.g., pots and pans, wooden spoons)

No prior knowledge or experience in music is required.

Activities

  1. Warm-up with a musical freeze dance: Play some upbeat music and encourage the student to dance freely. When the music stops, they must freeze in their current position. Repeat this activity a few times.
  2. Create a musical instrument: Show the student how to make a simple drum using an empty container and a balloon. Have them experiment with different sounds by hitting the drum with their hands or using different objects.
  3. Discover different genres: Listen to samples of different music genres such as classical, jazz, rock, and pop. Discuss the characteristics of each genre and have the student share their thoughts and preferences.
  4. Compose a short melody: Teach the student about musical notes and their durations (e.g., whole note, half note, quarter note). Have them create their own simple melody using these notes and write it down on paper.
  5. Explore rhythm with body percussion: Guide the student to create different rhythms by clapping, stomping, and tapping different parts of their body. Encourage them to experiment and create their own rhythmic patterns.
