Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand how different countries have unique cuisines and how geography influences the types of food people eat.

Materials and Prep

  • Cooking utensils (e.g., mixing bowls, spoons, measuring cups)
  • Ingredients for a simple recipe (e.g., pancake mix, fruits, vegetables)
  • World map or globe
  • Access to the internet or books about world cuisines
  • Paper and coloring materials

Activities

  1. Cooking Around the World

Choose a country from the world map or globe. Research and find a simple recipe from that country's cuisine. Prepare the recipe together, following the instructions. Discuss the ingredients used and how they might be influenced by the country's geography.

  2. Taste Test

After cooking, taste the dish you prepared. Talk about the flavors and textures. Compare it to familiar dishes from your own culture. Discuss how geography and climate can affect the availability of ingredients and the types of food people eat in different regions.

  3. Coloring Activity

Provide a coloring sheet with different foods from around the world. Ask the student to color the foods and label the countries they are associated with. Encourage them to think about the geography of each country as they color.

First Grade Talking Points

  • "Did you know that people in different countries eat different types of food?"
  • "Geography is the study of places and how they affect people's lives. It includes things like landforms, climate, and natural resources."
  • "For example, in hot countries, people might eat more fruits and vegetables because they grow well in warm climates."
  • "In cold countries, people might eat more hearty and warming foods like stews and soups."
  • "Some countries are surrounded by oceans, so they have access to lots of fish and seafood, which is a big part of their cuisine."
  • "Geography also affects what ingredients are available. For example, if a country has a lot of farms, they might have plenty of fresh produce."
  • "By learning about different cuisines, we can understand how geography shapes the way people live and eat around the world."
